The New Phone Book is Here! The New Phone Book is Here!

Well, I warned you it was coming. No, no...not the end of the world (that was Nostradamus, not Ponce de Leon), nor the death of Charles Nelson Riley...but this week's Creative Loafing cover story on local bloggers. Here's to our 15 minutes of fame (again with special thanks to Andy and Jeoff).

I Saw It on Ponce
www.isawitonponce.com

Why we love it: I Saw It on Ponce's singular obsession reminds us that, while Peachtree may be Atlanta's main street, Ponce is Atlanta. Peachtree has the offices, the boutiques and the malls, but Ponce has rich and poor Atlanta, black and white Atlanta, and Whole Foods and gay-leather-bar Atlanta, all rolled up on one street.

Blogger profile: It is a little-known fact there are two Ponce de Leons.

One is a long-dead Spanish conquistador who accompanied Christopher Columbus to the New World and, later, searching for a mythical fountain of youth, led the first European excursion to what is now Florida.

The other Ponce de Leon is a pseudonym for an Atlanta blogger who wants to remain anonymous because he says he "enjoys the mystery of it." According to his online profile, his interests are "boating," "meeting new people," "staying young," "chicken & yellow rice," "traveling" and "general conquistadoring."

The second PDL looks a lot younger than the 546 years he claims on his profile. And he doesn't look much like a conquistador, either. He's, in fact, a marketing consultant in his mid-30s who's endlessly fascinated with Ponce de Leon Avenue.

PDL recently moved back to Atlanta after a stint in New York. He was shocked by how much the city had changed since he left. "Everything's condos and shitty apartments now," he says.

Everything except Ponce.

"Ponce keeps the local flavor. It's relatively unchanged," he says. "It hasn't succumbed to overdevelopment. It's not like Midtown with all those South Beach condos."

I Saw It on Ponce started in February with an ode to one of his favorite hangouts, the low-key, retro breakfast joint Java Jive. It has since evolved into a one-stop repository of Ponce-themed restaurant reviews, photographs, nightlife listings and news of the weird. The site was inspired, PDL says, by recurring "only on Ponce" moments he says he encounters when he commutes on Ponce.

"Naked man masturbating in the street." Only on Ponce.

"Credit Union inside police headquarters building robbed." Only on Ponce.

The street is so rich with character, PDL thinks, because it is the border dividing several distinct "pocket neighborhoods" – Midtown, Old Fourth Ward, Virginia-Highland, Druid Hills, Candler Park, Decatur. "It divides neighborhoods that are almost different worlds."

Though an explorer at heart, PDL believes his one-street focus is what keeps his page interesting. "Do one thing and do it very well," he says.

PDL's goals for I Saw It on Ponce include exploring the stretch that runs east of Decatur to Clarkston, raising money to put a 24-hour webcam on Ponce, and removing the middle-of-the-road crosswalk markers recently placed on the street.

"Who uses crosswalks on Ponce, anyway?"

Knock-Knock...Who's There?...Madame...Madame Who?...

...Madame foots caught in the door! Open up!... (oh that one never gets old).

Yesterday we caught this young go-getter taking a little stroll to our local Publix store on Ponce. I'm not quite sure what inspired her attire (mumu and headwrap), but I suspect it is the older folks' equivalent of jeans and flip flops.

We couldn't help but make the comparison to one of our other favorite sassy headwrap wearers--the original Madame.

The Decatur Arts Festival: Go for the Art, Stay for the Ale and Alligator!

I hit the Decatur Arts Festival on Saturday and was reminded (yet again) of why I love Ponce (and Decatur) so damned much.

If you missed it on Saturday, then you're not s.o.l., cuz the festival is going on today, Sunday, May 27, 11 am-6 pm... I had so much fun yesterday I think I'll go back today (once this Belgian ale hangover subsides a bit...nothing an alligator on a stick or a polish sausage or two couldn't cure).

The crowds aren't nearly as bad as for other events held here, such as The Great Decatur Beer Tasting Festival in October--and the artists' work this year really is great--so be encouraged to check it out.

Directions

The Decatur Arts Festival takes place on the Square in downtown Decatur. The best way to get to the festival is to take MARTA. The Decatur station is on the East Line and located on the Square in the middle of the festival grounds.

If you are driving and using Google Maps or Mapquest enter the corner of East Ponce de Leon Ave and East Court Square, Decatur, GA 30030 as the destination location.

Shameless Self-Promotion

Have I no shame? Apparently not, but sometimes a guy has to toot his own horn...(I only tried that once in college, I swear, and I was really drunk and feeling limber). Next week's Creative Loafing is going to have a feature on local Atlanta bloggers-including yours truly. So grab a copy of the May 31st issue (or check it out online).

Mmm 15 minutes of fame never felt so good.

Special Thanks to Andy and Jeoff for pulling the idea and piece together!

60 Years of Ta Ta's vs. Ta Ta's of 60 Year Olds

The Clermont Lounge by any other name...is just as teat.

Since 1947 the Clermont Motor Lodge's "entertainment" has gone through a variety of name changes (though I think many of the dancers today were there on opening day).

Here is a list of the Clermont Lounge's aliases (in chronological order, of course--I am a Virgo you know):

The Anchorage Club
Gypsy Room
Continental Room
Atlanta's Playboy Club
Anchorage Supper Club
Jungle Club
Clermont Lounge

For a real treat (and for porn you can view at work), check out the Atlanta Time Machine for some awesome images that document the many faces (and ta ta's) of the Clermont Lounge.

Greg's Atlanta Time Machine site actually documents much of Atlanta "then and now" in pictures and is by far among one of my favorite sites out there.

Seeing the World in Black and White

For those who haven't been fortunate enough to come across the work of Katherine W. Linn yet, I wanted to take a moment to highlight this amazing local Atlanta artist. Her linocut technique creates true one-of-a-kinds.

Katherine's "Ponce de Leon collection" includes: The Georgian Terrace, The Clermont, Krispy Kreme, Mary Mac's Tea Room, The Majestic, The Plaza Theater, and the Fox Theater (her selection doesn't stop there, but you know we have our favorites).

Check 'em out on her website:
http://www.linnprintworks.com/index.html

And you can see the real thing at Katherine's next exhibit.

Support the local arts, y'all! (and tell 'em I Saw It On Ponce sent'cha!)

In Honor of This Week's American Idol Finale

Here's a taste of some local "talent" that was caught performing outside of the Majestic recently. We would highly recommend that this guy not quit his day job and consider selling the guitar to the shop around the corner on North Highland.

Closer I am to Fried...

Tuesday is Fried Chicken Night at Watershed in Decatur and is NOT to be missed. If you have yet to experience this fine "new southern" tradition then we recommend getting on the phone and making some reservations now (cuz you'll need 'em tonight).

Yeah yeah, I know you always point out Watershed as "the restaurant that one of the Indigo Girls owns" during your driving tours of Atlanta for out of town friends and family, but then you whip around that corner and get busy with the rest of your tour and totally forget that Tuesday is Fried Chicken night (especially after a hectic Monday at the office).

And if you think the chicken is good...wait till you try the chocolate cake!

Sherman is Back!

(cough cough) Damn its smokey out there today (and here I was bitchin' about air quality before). Lets hope they get those wild fires under control soon-cuz we don't want to rebuild this city again (well, maybe we could do without Atlantic Station).

Banana Hammock

I came across this display at the Publix on Ponce this weekend and just had to dub it "the banana hammock". Apparently this presentation approach worked, because the "hammock" is all but empty (granted it was a little cold in the store at the time). "I was in the pool!"

Matthew Cardinale Recovering From Stab Wound

I was saddenned to read another report of a violent crime in our beloved Ponce neighborhood last week. Matthew Cardinale was stabbed by two thugs just a couple of blocks from his own home while walking to the Exxon at the corner of Monroe and Ponce. Luckily he was able to escape and ran into the Exxon store for help--but the Exxon employee had the audacity to NOT assist him when he ran in bleeding and asking her to call 9-1-1.

Matthew, get well soon--and we're with you 100% on your fight to clean up our stretch of Atlanta from these meaningless and violent crimes. Trust we'll be boycotting that Exxon location too, but we also think you might have a nice not-so-little lawsuit to bring against Exxon for that dumb ass cashier who failed to act on your behalf.

A full reprint of Matthew's story:

APN Editor Recovers from Stabbing in Atlanta's Midtown
By Matthew Cardinale, News Editor, Atlanta Progressive News (May 19, 2007)

(APN) ATLANTA – APN News Editor released the following statement today:

Dear APN Friends and Readers,

I am writing to share with you a tragic incident which occurred this Tuesday.

I was stabbed in an attempted robbery only two blocks from my house in Midtown, Atlanta, as I was walking to the Exxon gas station on the corner of Monroe Drive and Ponce de Leon Avenue.

I’m okay now as far as we know, and recovering from the wound. I stopped bleeding Wednesday night finally, and was able to take small steps at the John Edwards dinner on Thursday.

It is important to share what happened not only as it relates to my experience and recovery, but so people understand the violent dangers which abound in Midtown.

I now believe there is an unspoken crime wave in my area of Midtown, one the powers that be in the City do not want you to know about. Rep. Thomas says she believes the wave is City-wide.

I was walking to the store down Monroe Drive, as two young Black men came toward me, looking kind of rough the way they were walking.

Both of the men were about 21 years of age I would guess. What was also suspicious was they were on opposite sides of the street, although it was clear they were walking together. They were walking at the same pace. One was wearing a white t-shirt.

I tried to walk around the guy on my side of the street. He blocked me by going left when I went left, towards the street. I then went right and he mumbled something.

“What?”

“Give me your wallet,” he said as he seemed about to grab me and attack me. At this moment I looked and the other guy was now coming across the street to gang up on me.

“No!” I shouted, running into the street. There were no cars.

The young man on my side of the street then reached as if to try to grab me. I didn’t see a weapon. But at that point he apparently stabbed me in right side of my abdomen. They didn’t get the wallet.

I ran to the Exxon gas station. “I’ve been stabbed! Please call 911!”

The Exxon attendant ignores me and continues to help the lady in front of me.

“Are you going to call 911?”

“You can use the payphone outside.”

“Why can’t you call?”

“Our phone doesn’t work.” Yeah right.

So then I went running across the street–bleeding out of my abdomen–to the other gas station in order to get help.

The police came shortly followed by ambulance.

I have not followed up with the police yet to see if they found the perpetrators, but I doubt they did. They asked me what clothing they were wearing but all I could remember was the white t-shirt.

At Grady, they did an x-ray and found no problem. Decided not to do a Cat Scan. They looked inside the wound–which was horrible–and couldn’t see all the way down but said what they saw looked okay. They cleaned the wound.

They asked me to stay for 24 hours for observation but, hating hospitals, I replied I would observe myself, thank you.

Susan Keith, APN Board Member, and our friend, Tim Wood, came to the hospital.

I have been on pain medication and just resting a lot as the wound heels.

OBSERVATIONS

My first observation is that the stabbing had nothing to do with the attempted robbery.

In other words, it should’ve been clear that he was not going to get the wallet at that point, so stabbing me did not help him with his goal to get money (if that was his goal).

Thus, the preferred theory about this–that they were trying to get money for crack–is insufficient.

I believe, and many people have also suggested, I would’ve been stabbed even if I gave him the wallet probably. Rep. Thomas said she believes it’s part of a new culture of street violence where it’s not just enough to rob somebody, but the goal is to hurt another person.

My second observation is, you can’t assume you’re safe because you’re in a safer part of a mixed neighborhood. People can cross over into the other side by walking.

I urge people to use extreme caution. Stay away from borderline areas at night, particularly alone on foot. If something looks suspicious, please turn the other way and run. (Relatedly, don’t wear sandals.) I thought I had learned this lesson in New Orleans a few years ago, but when I moved here, I didn’t think Atlanta was like this. I’m certain now Atlanta’s worse.

I was worried even though I felt suspicious about these young men, that maybe I was wrong and I would hurt their feelings if I turn and ran. But here’s an idea, maybe I could’ve pretended to have gotten a really important phone call or something and then ran.

Also, as I’ve spoken with my neighbors about this, it turns out there are a lot more stories of attempted robberies and car breaks ins that I don’t even know about. And I live on a nice residential street. So, there’s more violence out there than many Atlantans might think, and only by having dialogue will we understand the nature of this problem.

My third observation is, Exxon needs to be held accountable. This is a community store. The fact they wouldn’t call 911 for me, when I got robbed on the way to their store, is an absolute collapse of the compassion one human being is supposed to have for another human being.

I may call a community protest of this Exxon store. Stay tuned for details.

My fourth observation, when I went to Grady the ER people said, “You’re lucky you’re a big guy.”

The wound was 4 centimeters deep.

Therefore, if I hadn’t put on some weight recently, I might have had serious organ damage from this wound.

Not exercising for a few months probably saved my life!

(Now that’s deep. No pun intended.)

Obviously, we’re still not sure if there was maybe a little organ damage they couldn’t see. But so far it’s been like 4 days with no strange signs.

I’m also a bit worried if maybe they stabbed someone with HIV before stabbing me, so I’ll be getting tested in a few months.

Atlanta Progressive News will continue. The news will not be stopped, although I hope our readers will understand if the publication of new stories slows a bit for the next week or so.

It’s obviously difficult to understand why a person would do something like this to another person. I wonder if it was mis-placed rage. I wonder if these young men were angry about poverty and inequality, about a messed up world where it seems there’s nothing you can do to change it.

Why can’t all this rage be channeled into something positive? Into voting and community organizing?

The guy who stabbed me doesn’t know, obviously, about any of that. What do we do about people in our society who seem so lost they’ve resorted to nonchalantly hurting people, cultivating a gangster image, at the risk of murdering another person?

Can I Get an "Amen" ?!

We were so excited to learn that St. Paul's Presbyterian found themselves a permanent home at the historic Abbey on Ponce last year--and they have been doing great things ever since (serving the midtown community with ministries for the homeless, for AIDS patients, and for the elderly).

In recent years, most of us remember the Abbey as part of the Atlanta restaurant scene (complete with monk-robe wearing waiters), but here is a little history lesson that dates back a bit further in time to the building's early years.

Ponce de Leon Methodist Episcopal 1915 – 1943

From 1844 to 1939, the Methodist Church was split over the issue of slavery. The Ponce de Leon church was one of the principal “northern” Methodist churches in the South. When Bishop Frederick Leete arrived in Atlanta in 1912, he began a campaign for the Ponce de Leon church with a construction budget of $35,000. He delivered the first sermon in the building on November 12, 1916. When the Methodists united in 1939, the congregation was absorbed by other surrounding Methodist churches.

Faith Memorial Church 1944 – 1970

Beginning in 1935 in a tent, Rev. Ralph P. Byrd led an Assembly of God congregation that moved in 1944 to the Ponce de Leon church. Mr. Byrd’s Sunday morning sermons were televised live in Atlanta. Faith Memorial Church sold the Ponce de Leon building in 1970 and moved to Briarcliff Road.

The Abbey Restaurant 1977 – 2005

First opened in an old Unitarian church on West Peachtree in 1968, owner Bill Swearingen moved The Abbey Restaurant to Ponce de Leon in 1977. The restaurant was an Atlanta landmark, with monk-robe wearing waiters serving fine continental cuisine.

St. Paul’s Presbyterian 2006 – Present

St. Paul’s Presbyterian was planted by Pastor Chris Robins through Perimeter Ministries International in 1999 and purchased the current Ponce de Leon church in 2006. They are part of the Presbyterian Church of America (www.pcanet.org).

So be encouraged to become a part of the building's heritage yourself and check out the services (worship, outreach or otherwise) at St. Paul's Presbyterian or take advantage of their excellent event facility, the Abbey at St. Paul's.

I Always Feel Like, Somebody's Watchin' Me

So there's a Zoo Atlanta Panda Cam, a Times Square Cam, and a Blowing Bubbles Cam for goodness sake...
... and I propose we install a Ponce de Leon Cam (or two).

Most of the Atlanta city cams out there really are below par (do a quick search, you'll see what I mean, even the DOT cams are sad), so I can't think of a better way for us to show off our local flavor than with live, quality, streaming 24-hour video.

We've reviewed many of the cams on the market and this Netcam from StarDot Technologies stands out from the crowd. Check out their website and you will see what we mean--the live and archived image quality is second to none! And though the cam is "reasonably-priced" at $599, fully-configured and installed we're looking at a $1,000 price tag.

So, if you too agree with our assessment that a webcam (or two) on Ponce is a good idea (not just for virtual tourism, but also for keeping an eye on traffic or to help in cutting down on local crime), then please consider sparing a buck or two to help us reach our $1,000 goal (See the Ponce de Leon Live Netcam Fund PayPal Donate button on the upper right corner of the site). "For the price of a cup of coffee, you could make a difference and enrich a young non-profiteering blogger's site."

All funds donated are going to the cam ONLY and donors will also receive a future "SHOUT OUT" on the blog.

Thanks!

Happy Mothers' Day

The brunch crowd at Crescent Moon in Decatur was hoppin' this morning. Moms were being celebrated and well-fed all over the place. CM really is one of my favorite breakfast joints in Atlanta (I mean, Decatur)...and their dessert case is super tempting too. mmm mmm good.

Now go call your Mother!

Whole Foods You Did It Now

Hell hath no fury...like a woman, or CL reporter, scorned...

It seems a recent decision by Whole Foods on Ponce to stop carrying Lavazza espresso sent Cliff Bostock into a rage (which I can fully understand, because God help any man, woman or child who comes between me and my morning latte).

Here's a link to his tale of woe:

http://blogs.creativeloafing.com/omnivore/2007/05/11/give-me-lavazza-or-dont-wake-me-up/

Cliffy boy, we're all pullin' for you and if this Lavazza is as good as you say it is, we hope it returns to Whole Foods' shelves soon!

What Smog Problem?

We're #13! We're #13!...What do we win?!

Yes, I'm sure you recently heard that Atlanta ranked #13 in a recent American Lung Association study of the most polluted cities. Woohoo! We're officially a world-class (polluted) city! (OK, so technically we're only 25th for smog production, but we're 13th for "particles"-that's soot and stuff).

Over the years it has sadly become more and more obvious that the massive influx of people and industry into the city and the "keep up with the Joneses" insatiable desire for bigger/badder/gas-guzzlier SUVs is dramatically changing the air quality in this town. (and we can't blame it on the 5,000+ pollen count days either) I'd say that 8 out of 10 times I fly back into Atlanta, you can see the smog just hovering "like a dark cloud" over this great city that I love.

Now I'm gonna get all granola on you (and I'm not all that granola at all, really)...

I know there is alot of talk about companies "going green" and people buying hybrids these days...but let's do more than just read about it in the paper and nod in approval...let's actually make some steps to keep our great city from becoming the next L.A. or Gary, Indiana. This is the south people, not some over-industrialized steel town! Good clean water and fresh air is what we do!

Perhaps we need a "Hands On Atlanta" for keeping our city's skies clean...DELTA?...this might be a great cause for you to support...being in the SKY business and all...hmm...just a thought.

And supporting groups like Park Pride sure couldn't hurt...(remember from school, we learned that plants produce oxygen!)
http://parkpride.org/helpp.html

PS- all of you folks who moved here from Alabama, don't feel so bad, cuz Birmingham is #4 on the list..so that move to Atlanta was already a step in the right direction.

Dieceseis De Mayo!

OK, in keeping with the Mexican theme of late...(there's been no avoiding it with all of the Cinco de Mayo celebratin' and such)...
I had to put a plug in for some of the best GUAC on the planet...from our friends at Rosa Mexicano (more specifically the location on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, near Lincoln Center... http://www.rosamexicano.info/ ...but if you can't drop a few hundred for a round-trip flight to NYC for guacamole, I guess you could hit their Atlanta location in Atlantic Station (I'm not a fan of Atlantic Station myself, but that's a whole other blog just waiting to happen...) OR you could pick up Roberto Santibanez's new book "Rosa's New Mexican Table" and learn how to make some at home.

Roberto will be in town on May 16th, for a nooner, discussing and signing the book at the Cook's Warehouse (180 W. Ponce de Leon Ave) in Decatur. And, of course, some great mexican food is being provided.

To AIR (Guitar) Is Human

Yet again, our friends at the Plaza Theater remind us why we love them so much.
Next week they are bringing another unique and fun documentary to Atlanta (see, EVERY week can be the Atlanta Film Festival!).

AIR GUITAR NATION is the feature documentary about the year that air guitar swept America - from New York to Los Angeles and then all the way to northern Finland. AIR GUITAR NATION chronicles the birth of the US Air Guitar Championships and the personal journeys of those talented contestants who are vying to become the first World Air Guitar Champion from the United States.

A Pain in the Ass (Literally)

Late Friday evening, two armed men robbed the Play Makers barbershop at 270 Ponce De Leon Ave NE (less than 1 mile from City Hall East).

One person was wounded. Initial reports said that he had been shot in the buttocks, but newer information indicated that he may actually have been shot in the stomach. There was then a struggle with one barber punching one of the robbers in the head, causing him to flee.

The crooks escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and no arrests have been made.
If you have any information, please pass it along to Atlanta Police and help us keep the neighborhood safe.

Like Anyone Actually Uses a Crosswalk on Ponce

Am I the only person who thinks these stupid signs are a waste of taxpayer money AND cause MORE of a hazard to pedestrians and drivers? Let's see some stats on lives saved, Shirley.
