YOU Saw it On Ponce! FREE t-shirts!

We're looking for some new "whacky" submissions for our website and are offering up a free t-shirt each week to the person whose pic is dubbed "the best" for that week by our judges.

So break out your camera phone and snap a few pics of the shenanigans that you witness going down "on Ponce" (and Lord knows there are plenty of 'em out there!).

Email us your pics (along with your name, email and phone #--so we can contact the winners) to:
pics@isawitonponce.com

Now get out there and make us proud (and make us laugh out loud)...and earn yourself the shirt right off of our backs!

Best of luck!

From One Pearl of the South to Another

So, if things get too cold (or crazy) for your liking on Ponce de Leon Ave this winter, then grab your sweetheart and hop a flight to Ponce, Puerto Rico for some R&R.

Although more flights currently fly into San Juan, Puerto Rico has invested $2.5 million to renovate Ponce's Mercedita airport, which will include a 1,000-foot runway expansion that literally paves the way for more flight service. Already, Continental has added a daily nonstop flight to Ponce, and Delta has expanded service from Atlanta.

An Ode to the Majestic

I really like the take Greg has on this Atlanta icon. Take a look- and I'll see you there around 2 a.m. on Saturday.

A Slice of "Central Park" in Our Own Back Yard

http://www.atlantaolmstedpark.org/park.asp#

“We want a ground to which people may easily go after the day’s work is done,” Olmsted wrote. A century later, his artistic vision is still bringing pleasure to Atlantans.

If you ever find yourself trekkin' down Ponce between Atlanta and Decatur, and wonder what all of that green space is along the curvy way...well, it's Atlanta's own "Central Park" (of sorts). I know, I know... Piedmont Park is king of midtown, and Chastain Park definitely owns the Buckhead title, but give Olmsted Park it's due...it has the pedigree and deserves some respect too!

And on the 10th (and 11th and 12th ..) Day He Rested..

Could someone at the church PLEASE change the marquee already?

s'MARTA 2 bus

OK, so who was the rocket scientist who came up with the "take MARTA, its sMARTA" campaign-and, more importantly, when is somebody retiring it? And, while I have the soapbox out, why don't more Atlantans take public transportation? We pride ourselves on being a world-class city, so let's act like one y'all! (Google "Terminus")

Here's the Marta route map for "The #2" :

Screw American Idol!

What do you get when you cross a drunken unicorn with a few good (and a few not-so-good) bands and a crowd of adoring (and somewhat drunk themselves) fans? ... Well, you're lookin' at it. OK, so the pic isn't so great, but you get a good shot of the lead singer who was beltin' out the tunes this Saturday night at the Drunken Unicorn and he clearly was having a blast (it IS important that you love your job, you know.)

Haven't heard of the Drunken Unicorn you say? Well, then you either a) aren't one of the cool kids or b) were born before 1980 or c) live so far outside the perimeter, you can barely see the Bank of America tower... so, here's a quick education... The Drunken Unicorn is one of those great "underground" (literally) bars on Ponce... a very laid back vibe...all ages/races/religions/sexual orientations welcome... PBRs and New Castles are the drinks of choice...and they have a steady flow of local (and not-so-local) bands to entertain the masses. "Yes, Atlanta, you DO have a music scene!" (take that, Athens!)

Check out their site and help support the local music scene:

PS- my ears are still ringing (so swing by Eckerd Drugs for some earplugs...all the cool kids do.)

Where Berkeley Meets Mayberry

Today I brunched at Crescent Moon in Decatur with Screech's mom (Aunt Bea she aint). We discussed fashion and how great it is that her son is finally making a come back (though, we didn't use those exact terms, thankfully).

A Penny for Your Thoughts on This One

I'm glad somebody else said what I was thinking about Atlanta architecture "going off course"... and on my beloved Ponce, of all places. Why? why? why? (shakes fist at sky)

I will now (and forever) refer to this as the Duracell building on Ponce.

Takin' a Virtual Ride Down Ponce

This is a fun little Youtube video "drive" down Ponce at night (fun for those of us who live here, and for those who would like a virtual tour of the 'hood):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4B5acfUA7Q

Enjoy that didja?
Or think you can do better? How about making your own video tour of Ponce and submitting it? I'm sure we can find some good prizes for the best 3 spots. Go ahead, I dare ya!

Protecting the Midtown Border

Either the FBI has lowered admissions requirements OR this is the dumbest undercover agent on record.
I saw this guy waiting for the downtown MARTA bus today and the FBI cap just had to be documented...who knew that they were also focused on merchandising to the urban crowd?
At least he is color-coordinated.
Two snaps.

We (heart) Moral Orel and Adult Swim

If you haven't seen Moral Orel on Adult Swim yet, then you are truly missing out (and should say a few "hail Marys.") The boy just aint right...but I guess that's why it's "Adult" Swim.
Check out a few clips of the show (especially if you're going to miss the chili dinner and square dancing):

Chili AND Square Dancin' You Say?

Hell, I'd pay the $5 just to see the "fallout" from combining these two American past-times.
Who else is game?
Actually, Druid Hills Baptist Church is a great place of worship. Check out their site:

$34.78+Tax Is that for Daily or Overnight?

Oh, "Bless their Hearts" at the historic Clermont Motor Hotel... where $34.78 will get you a room (though I'm not sure if that is daily or overnight rate, as both are listed on the banner.) Hell, in some cities you can't park your car in midtown for that!
And if you read the fine print you'll probably see that the bed bug repellent and penicillin shot charges are what where they REALLY make their money.
I'm guessing there isn't a day spa or concierge on duty...
Honestly, has anyone ever stayed at the Clermont? For an hour? daily and/or overnight? Fess up you drunken frat boys who had a lil' bit too much fun back in the Clermont Lounge one night and just had to crash there...or you, Mrs. "Everything Was Booked for the Olympics" back in '96, so we had no choice...Please share your story with the rest of us (anonymously if you must) - as its sure to be a colorful tale.

Farewell to Mike Clark

Mike Clark, co-owner and manager of Southern Tracks Recording, died at home on Thursday, February 1, 2007, after an 8-month battle with cancer. He previously backed up Freddie Cannon ("Palisades Park") at Ponce de Leon Ball Park, the now-demolished home of the historic Atlanta Crackers.

The Other White EATS

What is there to say about EATS?
It is an Atlanta tradition for jerk chicken or your pick-o-pasta.
And, on any given day, expect to see folks from all walks of life...from hustlers, to midtown "bois", to down-home southern folks, midtown business people and Georgia Tech grad students...everyone and anyone who can appreciate a good (and VERY affordable) meal.
But be sure to make your friends drive...cuz the sharp turn in off of Ponce and that parking lot can be a real bear (its very matterhorn-ish).

Name the Location AND the EXACT Menu Item

If you can identify where this was bought and the contents of this half-eaten "lunch item", I'll buy you one, personally! But we need EVERY ingredient folks...so don't skimp or get pissy when you "meant to say that" but failed to...

Grolsch Me Out

I frickin' LOVE this new Grolsch beer billboard next to Kroger... if they ONLY came in bottles this big...
and this is clearly an attempt to encourage Swingers..."that's so money, baby"
mmmm...Green bottled beer...
causing men to exchange wives since 1615... bless you... and I'm sure its encouraged a few tattoos at the shop under the billboard in its time too...

Mmmmm....Java Jive...The Cup That Pleases, Indeed

Take one part java and one part jive...and what do you get? Well, none other than one Java Jive breakfast joint. And what's not to love...(well, not being open on Monday's IS a bit of a pain...and o.k., o.k., I know they're "cash only"...but hey they're worth it!)...the kitsch factor is high, and the food is damned good.
