We mentioned it back in June and the time has finally come...The SMART fortwo, a small car with a big urban solution, is coming to the streets of Atlanta and will make it's stop at Whole Foods on Ponce next weekend. The event is part of smart USA’s “street smart” road show, a national tour to introduce the car to the U.S. market.
The event will feature:
· Four fortwo vehicles for media and consumer test-drives on a closed course
· A mobile smart exhibit, with interactive displays and virtual safety demonstrations
· Safety display showing the tridion cell (reinforced steel cage), dual and side airbags, electronic stability program and more
· Opportunity for consumers to register as a smart “insider”
WHERE: Whole Foods, 650 Ponce de Leon Ave., Atlanta, GA 30308
WHEN: Friday, October 5 – Sunday, October 7, 2007 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

I think they're a great idea in theory. However, I saw a wreck with one of these and a Honda at the corner of Ponce and Highland and the person in this thing was badly hurt.
I mean, people in Atlanta can't drive.
This will probably work well in Portland or somewhere else a lot of smart people live.
Thanks so much for the comment. I'm 99.9% sure that it wasn't a SMART car that you saw in that accident (probably one of the smaller Suzuki's, Chevy's or the like), because the SMART isn't available in the US yet (it's only currently in Europe). I definitely agree that these cars aren't a great fit for most of Atlanta driving, but for in-town jaunts between neighborhoods (and as a replacement for those golf carts in Peachtree City) they could work. Be sure to check out the original posting from June--there's a crash test video from the UK that shouldn't be missed.
love this car! i hope they sell them here soon.
Well, thanks for your correction.
However, I'm 100% sure it was a Smart Car.
I'm the one that called 911 and was VERY up close and personal.
I wouldn't even drive a scooter in this town anymore. And I drove a Vespa most of my teens here. I drive a Prius, but I need at least that much protection around me.
Anonymous must have meant Portland, Maine. I am from Atlanta, but lived in Oregon for a time. Those beaver state drivers are no smarter, and certainly no better on the roads than drivers in Atlanta. Most of them are jacked up on caffeine and much too self-involved to care about anyone else on the roads.
